Deleting your portal account
Close your patient portal account or request full data deletion under NDPR/GDPR.
Overview
Two related actions. Closing your portal account stops portal access but keeps your patient record at the clinic (clinic still has your dental history). Full data deletion (NDPR/GDPR right to erasure) removes both portal access and most of your personal data from the clinic.
Prerequisites
- Signed-in portal account
- Decision: portal-close or full data deletion
Steps
Open Profile → Account. Side menu → Profile → Account tab.
Path A: Close portal account only. Close my portal account — you can no longer sign in, but the clinic keeps your records. Reversible by re-registering with the same email.
Path B: Request full data deletion. Delete my data — invokes the legal right of erasure under NDPR (Nigeria) or equivalent.
Read the confirmation page. Explains what will be deleted (PII) and what is retained (financial records, audit logs — required by law).
Choose specifics. Some patients want PII removed but treatments preserved for medical history; others want complete erasure.
Type your full name to confirm. Prevents accidental deletion.
Submit. Clinic legal/admin team processes within 30 days per NDPR.
Receive confirmation email. Once processed, you get an email confirming what was deleted and what was retained.
Expected outcome
- Path A: You can no longer sign in; clinic still has your dental record
- Path B: PII purged; financial records anonymised; audit log retained with hashed reference
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Want to recover after close | Re-register with same email within 30 days | After 30 days, full deletion |
| Want to keep just appointments | Path A keeps everything at clinic | Path A is the right choice |
| Clinic says they can't delete | Some records statutorily retained | Audit log + financial records retained for 7 years per NDPR |
| Want export before delete | Profile → Export my data | Download a complete archive first |
| Want to undo Path B | Cannot reverse | Be deliberate before confirming |
